Central Laboratory and Institute Building, Geisenheim

The elongated structure of the new laboratory and institute building forms the spatial end point of the historical campus, and with its portal inside the building it forms the transition point to the agricultural area. And the new building acts as a background to the two old buildings used by the university and connects an existing four-storey laboratory building into the ensemble.
The meandering building varies in its organisational structure - some parts have three rows of functional rooms, others just have two with a central corridor. Cutout sections at the entrances and the vehicle passage to the west and interior atriums enable light to enter the interior of the sequence of rooms. The design distinguishes between the rather technical facade of the office and laboratory facilities and the continuous green facade in the atriums. This tension between the technical facade and agricultural topics reflects the content of the vinicultural and horticultural research that is carried out inside the building.
