Historische Mitte, Cologne

The new buildings for the research and administration of the Romano-Germanic Museum, the Curia House of the High Cathedral Church, and the Cologne City Museum will redefine the urban space on the baseplate of Cologne´s cathedral and generate a place where Cologne´s history can be seen and explored from diverse perspectives. We united the requested functions in two typologically distinct structures – the powerful volume of the City Museum, which concludes the cathedral´s base in the southeast, and the slender, openly structured administration building for the Romano-Germanic Museum and the Curia house. A new museum forecourt ties the Romano-Germanic Museum and the new buildings together into an ensemble. The roman excavations under the cathedral´s base, which form the historic foundation of the two museums, are accessed via a shared lower foyer on the Kurt-Hackenberg-Platz.
