Complex connections between new and existing building

Bauhaus-Archiv Berlin / Darmstädter Tagblatt

In adding large exhibition spaces to the Bauhaus-Archiv planned by Walter Gropius, we were able to strengthen the institution’s urban appearance. We chose to place a slender glass tower on the new entrance plateau next to the start of the original architectural promenade at the Bauhaus-Archiv. Leaving the view of the historic building untouched, the highly visible landmark contains most of the museum’s public space. It is characterised by an experimental bearing structure, which symbolises the open, interactive approach of the Bauhaus institution today. The entrance tower and a lower building, comprised of a café and museum shop, offer the museum visitors a lively urban space. Barely visible from the street, the exhibition spaces are embedded in the existing terrain. In descending the steps, you can find the foyer of the new museum and the Bauhaus-Archiv, arranged around an inner courtyard that traces the outline of the existing sunken garden. This is considered to be the heart of the new ensemble. Here you can choose to visit the exhibition space or take a tour through the original building, the most important exhibit in the Bauhaus collection. The plan was to distinguish the materiality of the addition from that of the listed Bauhaus-Archiv, whereas key spaces such as the entrance plateau and foyer should tie both buildings together to create a modern exhibition and conference space.
