A long-lasting, sustainable laboratory is planned for the research campus of Neuherberg. The design proposes an extremely compact, highly flexible building structure. Its shelf-like system can react to a multitude of spatial demands of the research area. The building’s clear, elongated shape defines three zones that can be used in various ways, ranging from the traditional laboratory layout with its three distinct zones to an open, flexible landscape. This structural approach is imprinted on the façade. The segments of the structural system can be adjusted to interior demands, whereas the non-bearing prefab concrete elements react to the different directions in order to provide the required solar protection.
