After the floods in Dresden in 2002, it was decided to move the collections of the state museums from the vaulted cellars to a safe depot. However, instead of placing the depot in the courtyard of the Renaissance building as required, we decided to keep the courtyard free and design it as the foyer and center of the museum. This made it possible to create a second entrance to the museum from the Old Town and to connect it with the entrance from the Brühl Terrace. The tours through the exhibition rooms start from the foyer in the inner courtyard. By transforming the depot areas on the exhibition floors into walk-in show depots, we were able to connect the previously disjointed exhibition areas into tours around the inner courtyard. The new depot building is not visible to visitors. It hovers above the inner courtyard, hidden from view by a luminous ceiling. The two-story depot building is stretched loosely over the courtyard as a bridge construction and lies behind the listed facades on the narrow sides only on the development cores.
Today the covered courtyard is one of the largest venues in Dresden.
