Model studies for the facade

The C10 high-rise building, dating from the mid-1960s, is the only high-rise building that makes the campus of the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences visible from afar in its urban context. Thus it was to be preserved, slightly expanded, and technically and architecturally refitted.
The facades are developed according to their orientation and to the building's location on the campus and in the city. The south-facing façade, for example, received three-dimensionally folded, light metal shading elements across the entire front. They relate to the existing window openings and achieve an optimum between daylighting and sun protection. The geometric design of the fixed, low-maintenance sun protection elements was developed in collaboration with Transsolar and based on a simulation of the sun path. The north-facing elevation, facing the city center, was clad with an elegant glass façade with vertical pilaster strips that block oblique sunlight. To emphasize the verticality of the narrow sides facing east and west, they are covered with a vertically structured relief of light metal that reduces solar radiation to a favorable level.
